ChatGPT is designed to do everything for everyone. KnowTree is built for one thing: going deep on knowledge that matters to you. It's objective — no memory bleeding between projects. It's non-linear — every message becomes a node you can branch from. It's flexible — switch AI models at any point to pressure-test different perspectives.

The free plan lets you explore the interface and experience branching firsthand — enough to know if this way of learning is for you. Paid plans unlock frontier models like Claude Opus and Gemini Pro, which is where deep learning actually happens.

Do I need my own API keys?

No. KnowTree handles all the AI infrastructure for you. Just sign up and start chatting — no API keys, no setup, no technical knowledge required. You get access to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and Perplexity out of the box.

Can I export my conversations?

Yes. You can export any conversation tree as a structured document or share a read-only link with others. Your data is always yours.

Absolutely. Your conversations are stored securely and are never used to train AI models. Each conversation is private to your account, and you can delete your data at any time.

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how KnowTree (operated by Yoav Dori, “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares your information when you use our service at knowtree.chat. By using KnowTree, you agree to the practices described in this policy. This policy should be read alongside our Terms of Service.

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly

Account information: When you sign in with Google OAuth, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google.
Conversation content: The prompts you write and the AI responses generated in your conversations, including conversation structure (branches, nodes).
User preferences: Settings such as your preferred AI model, theme, and display preferences.

Information generated through use

Usage logs: We log AI model usage including model selected, token counts, and timestamps for billing and analytics purposes.
Session data: Conversation metadata such as creation time, last access time, and node counts.

Local storage

KnowTree uses your browser’s localStorage to store authentication tokens and UI preferences. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers except as part of normal API authentication.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to collect anonymous usage data such as page views, session duration, and general device/browser information. This helps us understand how the service is used and improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies — see Section 7 below.

3. How We Use Information

We use your information to:

Provide, maintain, and improve the KnowTree service
Process your AI conversations by transmitting prompts to AI providers
Manage your account and subscription
Track usage for billing and plan enforcement
Send transactional emails (e.g., account-related notifications)
Analyze usage patterns to improve the service
Prevent abuse and enforce our Terms of Service

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share data with the following third-party services as necessary to operate KnowTree:

AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Perplexity): Your conversation content (prompts and prior messages in the branch) is sent to the AI provider you select to generate responses. We use API-tier access, which generally means your data is not used to train their models.
Freemius: Your email address and subscription information are shared with Freemius, our Merchant of Record, for billing and payment processing. Freemius handles all payment card details directly — we never see or store them.
Loops.so: We use Loops.so for transactional and marketing email. The following data is shared with Loops: email address, first name, last name, sign-up date, subscription plan, total conversations created, last active date, and account status.
Google Analytics: Anonymous usage data (page views, session duration, device type) is collected by Google Analytics.
Google OAuth: We use Google’s authentication service for sign-in. Google receives confirmation that you authenticated with our service.
Fly.io and Vercel: Our backend is hosted on Fly.io and our frontend on Vercel. These hosting providers process requests as part of serving the application.
Slack: Error alerts and operational notifications are sent to a private Slack workspace for monitoring purposes. These may include anonymized error data but not your conversation content.
Legal requirements: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal request.

5. Data Retention

Active accounts: Your account data and conversations are retained as long as your account is active.
Free user prompt logs: Usage logs for free-tier users are anonymized (user ID and email removed) after 12 months. The anonymized data is retained for aggregate analytics.
Paid user prompt logs: Usage logs for paid users are retained while the subscription is active.
Account deletion: When you request account deletion (available in Settings), there is a 7-day grace period during which you can cancel by signing back in. After the grace period, your account and all associated data — including conversations, preferences, and usage logs — are permanently deleted.

6. Your Rights and Choices

Data export: You can download a full copy of your data (profile, conversations, and preferences) at any time from the Settings page using the self-service data export feature.
Account deletion: You can delete your account at any time from the Settings page. Deletion includes a 7-day grace period, after which all your data is permanently removed.
Conversation deletion: You can delete individual conversations or sessions at any time within the app.
Email opt-out: To opt out of non-transactional emails, contact us at yoav@knowtree.chat.
Google Analytics opt-out: You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

7. Cookies and Tracking

KnowTree itself does not set cookies. However, Google Analytics uses cookies to collect anonymous usage data. You can control cookies through your browser settings or by using the Google Analytics opt-out add-on mentioned above.

We use localStorage (not cookies) for authentication tokens and UI preferences. localStorage data is only accessible by our application and is not shared with third parties.

8. Data Security

We implement reasonable security measures to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, secure authentication via Google OAuth and JWT tokens, and parameterized database queries to prevent injection attacks.

However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

9. International Data Transfers

KnowTree is operated from Israel, with infrastructure hosted in various regions through Fly.io and Vercel. Your data may be processed in countries other than your own, including the United States (where most AI providers and hosting services are based). By using KnowTree, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries.

10. Children’s Privacy

KnowTree is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at yoav@knowtree.chat.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the “Effective date” at the top of this page. Your continued use of KnowTree after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
